Prisons netball team are determined to retain the East and Central Africa Netball Championship title that coach Imelda Nyongesa believes belongs to the Luzira based side.

The three-time champions since 2015 opened their title quest with a win aginst the hosts side Jeshi Stars 47-26 over the weekend.

Prisons who walked on court fatigued after only six hours of rest from the time the team arrived in Dar es salaam on a two day bus trip, used their experience to overcome their opponents.

Goal shooter Stella Oyela teamed up with Hadijah Nakabuye as the pair jointly netted the goals as the wardresses overcame the hosts at the National Stadium indoor arena.

"It was not an easy start for me and my teammates because we were all tired, but thank God we managed to win," skipper Lillian Ajio said.

The win took the defending champions to top of the table on two points. They are competing in pool A that also has JKT of Tanzania, KVZ of Zanzibar and Zimamoto, while in the other pool, 16-time champions NIC is yet to play fellow Ugandan side Police in the first group stage fixture.

They face JKU of Zanzibar and Police Morogoro in the other group stage draws at the weeklong event ending on Saturday at the some venue.
