ACCIDENT

Police has fired bullets in the air to disperse locals who were looting passengers aboard a bus from Nairobi-Kenya that was involved in a motor accident.

The accident occured at Lugazi sugar plantation along the Jinja-Kampala highway.

The Scania bus, belonging to Bus Car company registration number KCE 682H hit a truck, an Isuzu number UAK 813R that was carrying sand during a heavy downpour at about 5:40am.

The bus was heading to Kampala from Nairobi and the truck was going to the same direction.

Both vehicles got off the road and the bus overturned in a water channel.

Much as all occupants in both vehicles survived, majority from the bus sustained injuries and were rushed to Kawolo Hospital for first aid before they were taken to Kampala for better medical attention.

The bus overturned and landed in a trench

George Kamyuuka, one of the occupants in the truck, said they were hit shortly after joining the main road from where they had picked the sand.

Meanwhile John Jemba, the bus driver, said: "The truck did not have any indicator. There was mist and a heavy downpour."

The bus passengers said they lost their merchandise to people who disguised as well-wishers.

"Whatever was being retrieved from underneath was stolen by people who claimed to be helping us. It was until the Police arrived and fired bullets in the air to disperse locals who turned our double tragedy into their fortune," Morris Muchake said.

Both wreckages were towed to Lugazi Police station and no arrest was made.
