Dolphins youngsters show early intent as junior championships start

Dolphins' swimmers produced a dominant display early on as the second edition of the DStv Dolphins Junior Swimming Championships got underway at the Gems Cambridge International School pool on Friday.

Shalom Birungi opened Dolphins' campaign by winning the 7 and under, 25m breaststroke race in 24.93 with Baseline's Tin Wan Yuen and Silverfin's Aryiel Angemi finishing second and third in 29.01 and 30.75 respectively.

In the boys' heats, Dolphins' Jeremiah Mugerwa produced the best time of 26.45 where Jeremy Rieck and Jaden Mwase of the Silverfin clocked 27.29 and 30.50 respectively.

The Dolphins were also dominant in the 8 years 25 m breast category with Gabriel Mugalu, Ryan Barungi and David Sine completing a 1, 2, 3 finish just like in the 9 year category whereDaniel Nuwagaba, Jordan Ssamula and Peterson Inhyensiko made 20.18, 20.33 and 20.51 respectively.

Silverfin's Raya Angemi (22.90) was also untouchable in the girls' 8 years where she beat Dolphins' Aleena Katemba (23.38) and Lifetime's Macrine Kalombo (25.35).

The Seals Club Amelia Mudanye, Natalie Lutalo and Silverfin's Kecia Katasi were the top swimmers in the girls 9 years category with a time of 19.33, 20.83 and 22.96. The Seals also had Neema Kangi and John Kafumbe topping the 11 years category in the 50m breast, registering 40.31 and 39.71 where White Heather and Nanette Nsereko made 40.56 and 40.66 while Shane Birungi and Lionel Agaba touched home in 41.74 and 43.65 respectively.

In the ten years' category Silverfins' Isabel Angemi and Yonah Lumonya will be the swimmers to beat alongside Seals' Daniela Kirabo and Carlton Musenze in the three-day event that is competed for by children under 11 years.
