It was not quite a start to the season local hockey giants Kampala had hoped for when they lost heavily (4-0) in the men's final against the mighty travelers Wazalendo Sunday at Lugogo turf, the home of Ugandan Hockey.
The Kenyan outfit were gritty enough to somewhat embarrass Habib Sewava and Co in their own background. Ugandan sides have lost one too many times against Kenyan opposition, a fact that remains to haunt them.
Nonetheless, local minnows Rockets had upset the eventual champions 2-1 in the preliminary round.
In the final, Kennedy Munialo scored twice in the one sided affair as Evans Bwogando and Joseph Kasua got on the mark with a goal apiece.
In the ladies' category it was an all-Ugandan affair as Wananchi and Kampala entertained themselves in a 2-0 Wananchi result with Doreen Mbabazi and Doreen Asiimwe getting on the scoreboard.
The annual event attracts clubs and schools and this time round St Marys Kisubi was head and shoulders above the rest in the boys' category. Conversely Kings College Budo emerged champions in the girls' category.
The attention will now shift to the National Hockey League that is expected to start at the weekend.
