VOTE

LIRA - Emmanuel Ekung, a second year student of midwifery, has been declared the winner in the Lira University guild presidential elections.

Lira University electoral commission chairperson, Denis Okwir Jaramogi declared Ekung, 27, guild president on Sunday evening.

Ekung, who stood on an independent ticket, gathered 335 votes, beating his rival Morris Ogwal, a student of bachelor's degree in business management and scored 235 votes.

A total of 818 students were expected to vote according to the electoral register, but only 610 participated in the elections, which attracted three candidates. The third candidate, Daniel Ogwal, got 39 votes.

During the Saturday open-air campaign at the university campus in Barapwo parish, Lira sub-county, Ekung said one of his tasks would be revamping the student’s welfare and narrowing the gap between university administration and students.

Vien Obote, an independent, observer, said the electoral process was peaceful, free and fair.

However, few minutes when voting had just started, Kole district Youth Councilor George Okello was arrested by police for questioning after he ticked the ballot paper and photographed it using a phone. The Police described such act as incitement of violence.
