Boda boda cyclist who hit Cheeye confesses

Rogers Kirya (32) was found in Kinawataka, Mbuya in Nakawa Division of Kampala where he was hiding.

The police have arrested a boda boda cyclist who allegedly knocked dead veteran journalist and former director for economic monitoring at the Internal Security Organization (ISO), Tedy Sezi Cheeye at Nakawa along Jinja Road.

Rogers Kirya (32) was found in Kinawataka, Mbuya in Nakawa Division of Kampala where he was hiding.

Kirya confessed to Police officers at Jinja Road, where he was being detained that he knocked Cheye. He, however, said he did not intend to run away after knocking the founder of the Uganda Confidential newspaper but was advised by colleagues to flee.

Kirya made the remarks after he was showed a video clip of him knocking the journalist in broad day light.

The police first arrested cyclists at the scene who advised their colleagues to flee and they are still being detained at Jinja Road.

Sources revealed that the riders who were arrested aided the police to flush out the suspect from Mbuya.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Luke Oweyesigyire said Kirya would face charges of causing death through reckless riding. His case file number is TAR 78/2018.

Cheeye was killed as he made a walk through the busy Nakawa town on March 1, 2018.

He was released from Luzira prison in March last year after serving a 10-year sentence on charges of corruption, where he became a born-again Christian.
