“Police received information that some people were identified as FDC’s Pual Mwiru’s supporters, that is why we went to his campaign office at NaFIRI and arrested the said suspects,” Nandawula said.

POLICE in Jinja raided the offices of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate, Paul Mwiru and arrested over 40 FDC members.

The offices located at NaFIRI Hostel were raided at about 10:40pm on Tuesday, the last day of campaigns for candidates contesting in the Jinja East Municipality by-elections.

According to the Kiira region Police Spokesperson, Diana Nandawula, Police received information that some FDC members maliciously vandalised the NRM yellow buses along Main Street in Jinja after the last rallies of NRM's Nathan Igeme Nabeta.

Nandawula said the suspects are being detained at various Police stations in and outside Jinja town.

She said security has also been beefed up and re-enforcement was drawn from various Police stations around Jinja district to keep law and order during elections.

She said the three NRM yellow buses that were vandalised included a UAX 712X, UAA 036Q and UAX 346X and were being kept at Jinja Central Police Station as investigations are on-going.

Another scuffle between NRM and FDC supporters occurred near Nile Agro Industries as Mwiru and his supporters in a convoy from Walukuba heading to Busoga Square, was bypassing NRM supporters who were heading to Igeme's last rally that was attended by President Yoweri Museveni in Masese.

Supporters from both camps fought one another and the scuffle lasted for about 10 minutes.
