Kiriwo, Birungi top Let's Play Tennis Uganda Junior tournament

In the girls’ under 16 competition, Kibuli SS’s Winnie Birungi avenged last year’s loss.

U-16

Boys: Marvin Kiriwo bt Arnold Jurua; 8-4

Girls: Winnie Birungi bt Patience Athieno; 6-4

U-14

Boys: Troy Zziwa bt James Kasule; 6-3

U-12

Boys: Junior Nyata bt Brian Kimera; 5-3     

Marvin Kiriwo and Troy Zziwa continued to show they were still a force to reckon with in junior's tennis when they easily defended their titles as the second edition of Let's Play Tennis Uganda Junior tournament ended at Lugogo on Sunday.

Nakasero Primary School's Kiriwo who beat Ronald Opio last year in the boys' under 16 category final replicated his form this time seeing off Kololo SS's Arnold Jurua, 8-4 in the final.

In the U-14 boys' category, Old Kampala's Troy Zziwa who won last year's competition in the U-12 also showed steady progress beating Gayaza Road High School's James Kasule, 6-3.

In the girls' under 16 competition, Kibuli SS's Winnie Birungi avenged last year's loss to her school mate Patience Athieno, this time winning the girls' final, 6-4.

Kiriwo beat Reagan Ssentongo 8-0, Trevor Kazibwe 8-1 and Ronald Wakoli 8-3 while Zziwa beat Samuel Muhenda,6-1, Antoni 6-0 and Othman Ssenabulya 6-3 en-route to the finals.

On her part, Birungi was a 5-0, 4-0 and 4-0 winner over Naume Mbuwali, Hanany Wanjiku and Jovia Nakayenga respectively before wrapping up the championship.

Players in the  U-12 compete in the best of 9 games, the under 14, best of 11 while the under 16 play best of 15 games in the annual tournament aimed at unearthing and nurturing tennis talent in the country.

Farm Merchants sponsored the three-day event with trophies, medals, t-shirts, water, certificates and also catered for court fees.
