Kipoi appears in court, faces 22 counts

On Friday evening, Kipoi was produced before Chief Magistrate Jameson Karemani who read out the charges to him.

The former Bubulo West Member of Parliament Tonny Nsubuga Kipoi has been charged with 22 counts attempted trafficking in persons before Nakawa Chief Magistrate's Court.

Kipoi was charged Silas Opejo and Patrick Obella who are still at large.

However, Kipoi who was not represented in court by a lawyer, denied the charges and was remanded to Luzira Prisons until March 16.

Although the offence is bailable by Magistrate's court, Kipoi had no people to stand surety for him.

Prosecution alleges that the trio on April 17, 2013, attempted to traffic among others Ben Malinga, Isaac Okalebo and Juma Akol from Bukedea district to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Kipoi was arrested in Botswana and charged with fraud. He was accused of posing as a witchdoctor in which he defrauded people of money to the tune of an equivalent of Ush117m. He was extradited from Botswana last week.
