KYOTERA - Detectives have arrested a cell guard at Kyotera Police Station said to be responsible for the escape of 14 suspects on Wednesday.

Lameck Kigozi, the deputy regional Police commander, said the guard was arrested on charges of negligence of duty and he was being investigated.

Although the cell guard recorded a statement after the escape, Kigozi said arresting him was inevitable.

According to Kigozi, the Police station administrators delayed to report and investigate the matter, which created the room for the suspects to disappear.

The Flying Squad has entered the second day pursuing the 14 suspects but nothing has materialised.

A district security meeting has been held to devise means through which they can strengthen security and stop further escapes.

Pamela Watuwa, the resident district commissioner (RDC), said those who escaped from custody will be pursued and brought to book.

She appealed to the public for availing the Police with information concerning the suspects.

Watuwa explained that Kyotera Police Station had no detention facility to keep high level offenders.

The suspects drilled a hole in the cell and vanished.

They suspects being hunted are Katamba, Ssewadda, Matovu, Mayombwe, Lubega, Serunjogi, Kazibwe, Kasozi, Ashim, Mugabi, Mbabazi, Nsereko, Wasswa and Mutaawe.

The guard only realised that the suspects were missing when he was conducting an early morning cell check.
