AMISOM foreign ministers, defence chiefs meet in Kampala

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. David Muhoozi officiated at the opening of the meeting that was chaired by Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Kutesa.

Foreign ministers and defence chiefs of Troop Contributing Countries (TTCs) of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have converged to forge a way forward on peace and security in Somalia.

The delegates from Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Djibouti and Ethiopia met at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort, in Kampala on Thursday.

Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. David Muhoozi officiated at the opening of the meeting that was chaired by Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Kutesa.

In his remarks, Kutesa listed several achievement of AMISOM including liberating 80% of the Al-Shabaab dominated areas; and neutralizing the threat of piracy at sea that threatened international shipping and trade.

Kutesa also appealed to the international community to look at the bigger picture in Somalia, so that the gains made in recent years, through enormous efforts and great sacrifice of AMISOM are not in vain.

The meeting precedes the Summit of heads of State and Government of the TTCs to be held on Friday. The summit is convened by President Museveni within the framework of the conclusions of a September 2017 meeting in New York.

Speaking at the function, the African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, Smail Chergui thanked President Museveni for taking the initiative to convene the meeting; and TTCs for paying the ultimate sacrifice to restore peace and security in Somalia.
