DISASTER

SOROTI - Residents of Tukum village in Soroti district are counting losses after storm on Wednesday ripped off roofs, destroyed houses and trees.

The storm, which started at 5:00pm and lasted for three hours, left at least 40 houses in the village destroyed.

For Margarete Acam, her house roof was blown away, resulting in the destruction of the walls and her properties. Her kitchen and pit latrine were equally destroyed.

"The rain, which was characterised by wind, thunder and lightning, took us by surprise and by the time it subsided, my home was no more," Acam said.

Her family is currently staying at a neighbour's house.

The rains did not spare animals, poultry fouls and crops such as cassava and potatoes. This is likely to result in famine in the area.

Francis Eseru, 38, whose two houses were completely destroyed, said it was the worst disaster he has experienced in his lifetime.

"We call on well-wishers to help us with food supplies because our crops have been destroyed," said Eseru.

However, the LC3 chairperson Simon Emetu, said the sub-county disaster committee will go down to the ground to assess the extent of the damage caused by the disaster, which will be the basis for lobbying for support from the district and other developmental partners.
