There is more to a wall unit than just storage for a television. A wall unit has a place reserved for a TV, decoder, DVD player and a home theatre. Suzan Gitta, an interior designer in Ntinda, Kampala says beyond providing storage, a wall unit also enhances the appearance of the living room.

The unit has sections where you can place precious dish ware made of high quality porcelain, picture frames and photo albums. You can also keep wines and spirits in the unit as well as medals and artifacts.

The wall unit is, however, not a sideboard where you store everyday utensils.

"The type of plates and cups stored in the multi-purpose wall unit, are special," says Gitta.

"Usually, precious plates that you only use at special occasions or ornaments that you never use, are what you place in there," she explains.

There are various sizes of wall units. "Choose a unit basing on the size of your living room. A spacious living room requires a bigger unit and vice versa. If a room serves both as a dining and sitting room, find a unit that suits the space," she adds.

There are a variety of wall unit designs on the market. The more modern ones have lights inside. Some are all glass, wooden or melamine, while others are a combination of two or more.

"When purchasing a wall unit, put into consideration the colours in your living room," advises Gitta, adding that the unit should match the furniture.

The units come in a variety of colours like wooden brown, black or cherry.

"It is safer to opt for black because it matches almost every colour." The cost of a wall unit depends on the size, type of wood and design.

The prices range from sh300,000 to sh5,000,000. Some exclusive designs, however cost more.
