KCCA to recruit youth for bodaboda registration

KAMPALA- The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), has started the process of recruiting youth who will help in the exercise of registration of the bodaboda riders.

"This is to seek suitable applicants with the following qualifications to carry out this exercise," a circular from Kampala Central division signed by the town clerk Theo Tihibika, states.

Tihibika said all divisions in Kampala have agreed through their town clerks to recruit youth from the divisions to work during the exercise which he said will soon start in Kampala.

The circular comes after the inter-ministerial committee agreed that a team of youth be recruited so that they are engaged in the registration of all bodaboda riders in the city.

According to a source from the Kampala minister's office, once the recruitment exercise of the youth is complete, the registration exercise will begin.

"We are identifying few members of the community who will help us to carry out the registration of the cyclist when the time comes," Tihibika said.

He added that the screening of applicants will take a short time.

The KCCA director of public and corporate affairs, Peter Kaujju, said the registration exercise will be conducted after the inter-ministerial committee set up by the Kampala minister Beti Kamya has come up with guidelines.

The committee includes the works ministry, the National Identification Registration Authority, Uganda Revenue Authority, the security ministry, Police, Kampala ministry and KCCA.

Recently, Kamya said the bodaboda industry has a negative image locally and internationally and needed to be streamlined.

"The Government, through the security ministry together with other stakeholders such as KCCA, have decided to streamline the industry because wrong elements had joined the business to execute their plans," Kamya recently said.

Also presiding over the National Resistance Movement (NRM) 32nd Liberation Day celebrations in Arua, President Yoweri Museveni condemned bad road users, especially bodaboda riders in the city, which he said scare away foreign investors.

Kaujju said there is a government policy in the city which requires all bodaboda cyclists to abide by the law.

He said government agencies will come up with a programme of registering bodaboda riders, adding that the programme will take three months.
