Sports federations want UOC support

Badminton chairman Shaban Nkutu made the appeal yesterday.

National sports federations have asked the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) to help them get funding to enable them implement their calendars effectively.

Badminton chairman Shaban Nkutu made the appeal saying the support would  also enable them prepare their athletes for international engagements.

"I want to appeal to UOC to financially support federations so that we can be able to prepare strong teams and also implement our programmes," Nkutu said.

However, UOC president William Blick urged them to work with the National Council of Sports, saying the council help them bargain for a bigger budget from the government.

"We would like to fund you, but we operate under a limited budget. Even Olympic solidarity funds are for elite athletes. However, you should work with NCS and be able to push for bigger budgets," Blick explained.

Meanwhile, UOC will continue carrying out capacity building courses that will help national federation leaders acquire knowledge and skills to manage their organisations effectively.

"We have conducted several diploma and certificate courses to capacity in the different National Federations and we shall continue with them this year," UOC Secretary General Dr. Donald Rukare.
