KAMPALA - The army has recovered an AK47 rifle and 90 rounds of live ammunition from the home of a city businessman.

The incident on Friday evening followed a surprise raid on the home of Protus Magara at the Akright City Estate on Entebbe Road, where the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) operatives closed in on him.

Magara a.k.a Smart, also has an online sports trading platform known as D9 Club, which operated in Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Luke Oweyesigyire, confirmed the raid.

"Magara was arrested after a search of his home and he is still with the military. He was found with a gun, which has serial numbers of the army," Oweyesigyire said.

He, however, said details about the arrest could be obtained from the army.

According to Oweyesigyire, upon arrest, Magara told operatives he obtained the gun from the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), but could not produce documents to prove his assertions.

Oweyesigyire said charges against Magara would include illegal possession of a firearm.

In June last year, Bank of Uganda (BOU) ordered for the freezing of D9 Club accounts in all commercial banks, which it classified as of characteristics of a of a pyramid scheme.

According to a circular issued last year to all management of commercial banks, credit institutions and microfinance deposit taking institutions, BOU issued to them Magara's bio data.

Magara's arrest is the latest of CMI operations in and around the city.

The CMI and other security agencies recently unveiled a racket of a suspected criminal gang involving the Bodaboda 2010 association leadership following the murder of Francis Ekalugar, the accountant of Case Clinic in Kampala.
