KAMPALA - The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has described the recent arrest of its Rubaga division party chairperson, Abdallah Kitatta, as an "eye opener", vowing to scrutinise party officials before things get out of hand.
According to a statement issued by the NRM secretary general, Justine Kasule Lumumba, the arrest of Kitatta, the patron of the Bodaboda 2010, has no connection with the ruling party.
"I have also further established that his arrest by security agencies has no connection with the party operations. As NRM, we don't condone criminality and we cherish the rule of law.
"The incident is, however, an eye opener for us at the secretariat to start keeping a keen eye on all those in the party leadership positions," she said.
Kitatta was arrested Saturday evening in a joint security operation by military intelligence operatives around the city.
He was arrested with others in connection with criminal activity, including the murder of a city accountant, Francis Ekalungar.
A group of NRM youth in Rubaga division this week also petitioned the NRM secretariat, asking Lumumba and President Yoweri Museveni, the NRM party chairman, to urge Kitatta to step aside from his office as NRM party chairperson Rubaga division, until investigations into matters surrounding his arrest are concluded.
