Uganda's pursuit for World Cup qualification has proved to be a distant dream down the years.

In fact, the country's three previous decades of attempting to make an appearance at the world event and with it the priceless chance of holding the highly coveted trophy, have ended in heartbreak.

But thanks to Coca Cola, Ugandans will finally realise that cherished dream when the trophy arrives in Kampala on March 5-6.

The trophy will be coming to Uganda for the second time since 2009 when President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni received it.

FIFA regulations governing back then allowed only African heads of state to touch the prestigious trophy.

The global leg of the official FIFA World Cup trophy tour for Russia 2018 was launched at a ceremony in London on Monday. Sir Geoff Hurst, a winner with England in 1966, Andrea Pirlo, who won the World Cup 40 years later with Italy at the Germany 2006 tournament, and Russia 2018 ambassador Victoria Lopyreva attended.

The tour will see the trophy visit 91 cities, across 51 countries and six continents.

Pirlo described the trophy tour launch as a "great honour" and called winning the World Cup the "pinnacle" of a player's career.

"It is a great honour that I could be here today to send off the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour plane on its journey around the globe," Pirlo told the official FIFA website.

In 2009, there were free tickets to the tour during Coca- Cola promotions and fans will have the opportunity to have souvenir photos taken of them with the trophy.

This should be a memorable experience considering that the trophy is only displayed at FIFA's world football museum in Zurich.
