Makerere wrapping up 68th graduation ceremony

KAMPALA - Makerere University awarded degrees to students of the Business School (MUBS) on Thursday, at the penultimate session of the week-long graduation ceremony.

On Friday, the largest university on the land will wrap up its 68th graduation event with a special recognition of South African anti-apartheid figure Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

The wife of fallen South African anti-apartheid hero and president Nelson Mandela will receive an honorary Doctorate of Laws.

President Yoweri Museveni and his wife Janet, who is also the Minister of Education and Sports, are expected to grace the occasion.

Winnie will be recognised for "bravely" withstanding "constant harassment by the apartheid police" and for challenging "their brutality at every turn".

According to Makerere University, the political activitst and former head of the Women's League of South Africa's ruling party, African National Congress (ANC), "became a symbol of the anti-apartheid struggle and of the bravery and determination of the oppressed to gain their freedom against all odds".

On Thursday, Makerere University chancellor Prof. Ezra Suruma thanked the management of MUBS for guiding and steering the graduands "through the many complexities of academic life".

He also recognised the Government, university council, development partners, parents and other stakeholders for their support to the students.

The same day, the university recognised the best overall student, Caroline Nyamenya, who scored a CGPA of 4.95 in Bachelor of Commerce (BCOM). She was presented with a plaque and sh1m.

Gladys Nabunya, who scored a CGPA of 4.72, was also awarded for being the best scholar.

Both are from MUBS.

 On such an important day in their lives, graduands had to look their very best

Dr Kibirango Moses, one of those who graduated with a PhD, said if people know what to do, then they can transform the economy.

"We can use the knowledge we have acquired to turn the economy around," he said."

On Friday, the university will award degrees to the students from the:

• College Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT)

• College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS)

• School of Law (LAW)
