Parliament on Tuesday passed a motion honoring Alhaj Kaddunabbi Lubega upon his election as president of African Insurance Organisation (AIO). He took over from Bachir Baddou of Morroco.

AIO is an umbrella body for all African insurance practitioners on the African continent with 351 corporate entities.

Kaddunabbi is the executive director of Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA). IRA’s main objective is to ensure the effective administration, supervision, regulation and control of the business of Insurance in Uganda.

Kaddunabbi is also the chairperson of the East African Insurance Supervisors Association and a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance.

The motion to recognize Kaddunabbi was moved by Rubanda East MP Henry Musasizi and seconded by Kioga County MP Anthony Okello.

The motion took cognizance of the services Kaddunabi has rendered and contributed to the insurance sector.

Musasaizi said Kaddunabi had done a commendable job evidenced by the transformation registered in the insurance industry.

“This is a unique seating that I would like to chair while the member is seated in the gallery rather than the sad one. So it’s good to recognize people while they are still alive,” the deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah who chaired the plenary session said.

MPs who hailed his hard work coupled with diligence, implored the former Butambala MP to use his new position to sensitize the public on the need for insurance and focus on the need for agriculture insurance to protect farmers among other things.

Kaddunabi was also applauded for spearheading the formation of MPs’ Pension Scheme.

The establishment of the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda was a consequence of Government’s adoption of the liberalization and privatization policies which ended its role of directly engaging in the provision of goods and services and taking on the role of supervisor or regulator.
