Badminton: All Africa schools' championships kick off at Lugogo

Uganda is hosting the 2017 All Africa Schools' Badminton championships that rolled off this morning at Lugogo Indoor Arena.

Players have come from Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Uganda and Mauritius that has Saint Esprit College, the defending champion for the boys.

Nigeria, Lesotho, Ivory Coast, Dr. Congo and Ethiopia pulled out of the event at the last hour due to flight connection challenges, according to CEO of Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) Simon Mugabi.

The general secretary for the National Council of Sports (NCS) has thanked the association for linking up the continental players and also Sun Industries for not only sponsoring the championships but also procuring the international playing mats that have been used at the event.

Uganda is represented by Kibuli SSS, which opened up with a game against defending champion Saint Esprit College of Mauritius and Kakungulu Memorial was drawn against Egypt International School for the boys.

The championships started with team events that end on Wednesday. The individual draw will be played till Friday.
