Over 30 rabid dogs killed in Kagadi

About a month ago, residents resolved to kill all rabid dogs that have led to the death of three children in Bwikara sub-county

The death toll of rabid dogs killed by residents in Bwikara sub-county has risen to over 30 out of at least 50 that are still loitering in five villages of Mairirwe parish Kagadi district.

Last week at least 20 more dogs were killed in the five villages of Bwikara sub-county. 10 more dogs were killed over the weekend by combined team of local council one officials and residents in five villages of Kiguli, Kayanja A and B, Bugambaihe A and B in Mairirwe Parish.

About a month ago a village meeting convened by Godad Tumwebaze, the Bwikara LC3 chairperson, resolved to kill all rabid dogs that have led to the death of three children in Bwikara sub-county.

Vincent Rutaraka, 50, whose child succumbed to rabies said he has actively participated in the killing of the rabid dogs in the area.

"The hunt for more dogs is still on and we are committed to wiping out all rabid dogs in the area. We want to show errant dogs owners that if they fail to take their dogs for vaccination, they will lose them," he said.

Julius Tumwekwase, a teacher at Bugambaihe Primary School said sensitisation by veterinary staff and local council officials in still going on to ensure all the remaining dogs are taken for vaccination at various vaccination centres in the sub-county.
