Over 60% of residents in Kakumiro have never tested for HIV

Robert Aganyira, the Kakumiro district HIV focal personnel while presenting the quarterly HIV report from July to September this year during a stakeholders meeting held at the district head quarters on Saturday said only 38% of the people in the district have tested for HIV and know their status.

Health officials have revealed that over 62% of people in Kakumiro district have never tested and do not know their HIV status something which has been blamed for hampering efforts to curb down HIV/AIDS scourge.

Robert Aganyira, the Kakumiro district HIV focal personnel while presenting the quarterly HIV report from July to September this year during a stakeholders meeting held at the district head quarters on Saturday said  only 38% of the people in the district have tested for HIV and know their status.

According to the report, about 14,089 people tested for HIV at various health facilities and 560 were found positive and immediately got enrolled on antiretroviral treatment-ARVs.

Robert Senteza, the Kakumiro district health officer said domestic violence has been marked as one of the factors hampering the war against HIV/Aids. He has called upon all stakeholders to sensitise people against domestic violence.

''The increasing domestic violence in Kakumiro district has hampered the war against the fight of HIV in the district.some married partners revenge by having extra -marital affair after domestic misunderstanding and this has caused the spread of the scourge'', he said.

Innocent Asaba, the Kakumiro district chief administrative officer has urged all leaders and civil servants to foster the President's message of fighting against HIV scourge.

''The fight against HIV scourge should be a joint effort, teachers in schools should intensify guidance and counselling and ABC strategy to the youth and married people should also be disseminated as a means of minimising the spread of HIV/Aids pandemic disease,'' said Asaba.

Obed Tushabomwe, the district councillor representing Mpasana who is the chairperson of the general purpose called for rolling out the fight against HIV to the village level to target local people.
