Boys should cook too - Kadaga

“Some of you think cooking is for only girls, no! When it comes to domestic work, boys too should be brought on board”

The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has asked parents in Busoga to engage the boy-child in kitchen activities. Kadaga was speaking at Emirates Academy during the cultural camp cade-named Ekigangu where boys and girls between the age of 5 to 25 years will get to know their cultural values and practices.

"Some of you think cooking is for only girls, no! When it comes to domestic work, boys too should be brought on board" she said "chefs in big hotels in Uganda are managed by men" she added.

Kadaga promised to lobby for funds to enable more children benefit from the cultural event which she says, instills socially acceptable skills and cultural values. Kadaga asked participants to spread the gospel among to other children who failed to attend.

The RDC, Moses Dumbasaidone said, "a week is not enough for such a cultural event. He noted that early in the days, children spent the entire holiday with grandparents particularly to appreciate and understand cultural values like how to greet, sit while having meals and listening skills while the elders are talking.

Ekigangu is a rotational cultural event hosted by chiefdoms in Busoga in ObwaKyabazingabwaBusoga annually.

Joyce AbaliwanoMulebeke, the Minster for Gender and Children's affairs in Busoga Kingdom noted that the event aims at teaching children cultural values, rights and responsibilities which nurtures good descendants of Busoga. 

Mulebeke also revealed that, other activities will include creating awareness on HIV, how to deal with the adolescence stage. Among other activities, Mulebeke said inspirational speeches from society's respected personalities are on the agenda. 

Putting the event's theme into context ‘Using culture to end child marriages and keep girls in school',Mulebeke warned girls against engaging in pre-marital sex but instead embrace education if they to be like key female personalities in Uganda.

Meanwhile, children were excited to see the speaker of parliament Rebeeca Kadaga literally demonstrating how to prepare a meal in Busoga.
