CRIME | RUKUNGIRI

Two security guards were on Sunday night killed by yet to be identified thugs in Bugangari sub-county Rukungiri district.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi regional Police spokesman, identifies the dead as Brian Tumubwaine of security 2000 from Ntungamo district and another local guard Fred Rutarindwa of Rwenyerere cell, Bugangari parish in Rukungiri district. They were Compassion International offices in Bugangari at the Bugangari Church of Uganda (North Kigezi diocese).

According to Maate, the bodies of the deceased were discovered in the wee hours  of the Monday morning by people who were passing by the church.

He said after killing the guards, the thugs broke into the offices of Compassion International, but they did not take anything.

"We have invited the government doctor to do a postmortem. The assailants did not use guns to kill the guards," Maate said.

Mohammed Kakesa, the NRM publicity secretary, said he was among the first people to reach the scene of crime. He said the assailants broke into the offices, but all the computers and laptops of staff were not tempered with and all other office equipment were safe.

"We were told that there was no money in the offices. They also broke into the strong room, but did not take anything," he said.

Robert Mubangizi, a parishioner of Bugangari Church said he suspects that the thugs  were targeting the days when the staff give out money and other items from donors to children being looked after by the organisation.
