HOMES & CONSTRUCTION

Building the home of your dreams starts with you being part of the project from beginning to end.

However, with this also comes the potential for unexpected expenses and going over the budget.

Architect Abdu-Wahab Nyanzi says the project should be supervised by a qualified
architect right from foundation to completion.

According to Nyanzi, this will help a client to avoid errors that might lead to demolitions, re-works and wrong interpretation of drawings, as well as loss of time due to delays.

During such supervision, the architect might come up with some more cost saving-ideas.

"Following your house plan enables you to utilise all the available space on your land. But to achieve this, you should desist from deviating from the plan," Nyanzi advises.

David Kireli, a civil engineer, says a four-bedroom house is suitable for plots not less than 100ft x 50ft. The design of this house has the following features: He says its back entrance is positioned in a way that allows one to access the bedrooms, kitchen and dining without having to go through the main entrance. Such a plan minimises sitting room interruptions.

According to Kireli, the master bedroom is designed with shelves along the passage
to provide storage space for items such as shoes and art pieces.

He says a technical person can ensure that the ground plan has a walk-in closet that leads to the bedroom area and has immediate access to the master bathroom, with a bathroom and dressing room.

"The kitchen is designed with a worktop and shelves under the worktop and wall
cabinets. The plan also has a pantry that provides more storage space, unattachedlaundry room (where you can put a sink and ironing platform).

Paint and plastering
Fred Lukoda, a construction expert, says paint can be used for the exterior finishing after plastering with sand and cement.

He says if one has finances, they can change the colour of the walls for a new look whenever they want.

The popular shades today include, peach, cream, white, brown and other shades inbetween.

It is also trendy to make colour combinations so that your house stands out.
