Residents of Kamuganguzi sub-county in Kabale district are in a sombre mood,  following the death of a secondary school student after a sand quarry collapsed on him.

According to the Kigezi Regional Polices spokesperson, Elly Maate, the deceased was identified as Norbert Naturinda, a Senior Three student of St Charles Secondary School Kicumbi in Kabale district.

Maate told New Vision that the incident happened on Thursday midday when Naturinda, together with others, went to mine sand at Buranga stone quarry in Rukarango village in Buranga parish, along Kabale-Katuna road.

"He entered the quarry and started scooping sand and passing it to those outside. What he did not realise was that some people were standing on top of the sand above. Unfortunately the whole heap of stones collapsed and trapped him inside," Maate said.

He said one other person sustained a broken leg and was rushed to hospital.

"The Police was notified and the deceased's body was dug out. The body was handed over to relatives for burial after the postmortem," he added.
