DP mourns veteran lawyer Balikuddembe

Balikuddembe is remembered for the prominent role he played representing the Democratic Party in a number of cases.

 

The members of the Democratic Party and legal fraternity are mourning the passing away of  veteran lawyer Joseph Balikuddembe on Thursday.

Balikuddembe is remembered for the prominent role he played representing the Democratic Party in a number of cases. One of the landmark cases was the Constitutional Court case that led to the nullification of the Referendum (Political Systems) Act 2000.

Balikuddembe was also the lead lawyer for Col. Kizza Besigye when he unsuccessfully petitioned the Supreme Court to nullify President Yoweri Museveni's elecrtion in 2001.

 "Sooo sad is this day. DP has suffered another blow. As DP stalwart Kisabagire is laid to rest, One of its great brains has gone back home too. Senior Counsel Joseph Balikuddembe has succumbed to cancer," said Dr Bayigga Lulume in a Facebook post.

"You will always be our inspiration whenever we talk about Politics with principles, open government, the rule of law, the love for Democratic Governance, love of country, Buganda and your party, the Democratic Party. I am proud of your work, as a lawyer, as a DP NEC member and as member of the Pope Paul social club. May the Lord Grant you Peace and eternal life," Lulume, a former legislator and prominent DP figugue said.

 The Kampala City Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago said:

"My deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of comrade Balikuddembe Joseph ESQ...May the good Lord reward you abundantly for your immense contribution towards the struggle for restoration of rule of law and Constitutional governance."

Lawrence Kiwanuka Ssemagulu Nsereko, another DP member based in the United States of America said: "You will always be the one I run to! Even in the turbulent final days you continued to give me counsel. You guided me in my faith, pruned me to be a royal Muganda boy, kept me steadfast in the Democratic Party, and you were part of the Henry Kayondo, Edward Muguluma, defense team in my many trials. You were always at hand to get me out of trouble. You fought a good fight, rest well ‘Daddy Puliida'."
