Omoro district offers land for cancer institute

According to the Uganda Cancer Institute, in 2016 the number of cancer patients increased by 4,000.

The long awaited opening of a cancer institute in Northern Uganda has materialised  after Omoro district local government offered four hectares of land to the government for the Northern Uganda Cancer Institute.

The facility, when completed would offer services such as cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment along with other services.

Douglas Peter Okello the Omoro district local government chairperson said the land was offered during the 8th full council meeting following a request from Gulu regional Referral Hospital (GRRH), Mulago cancer institute and ministry of health.

Okello said an agreement has been reached between the parties and an assessment of the land has been done.

He noted that the institute will not only benefit the people of Omoro but the entire population of  Northern Uganda, some of whom were unable to access the Cancer institute  at Mulago  due to lack of finance.

Justine Odong Obiya , the Koro sub county chairperson, where the land is located said  the council offered the land free of charge.

According to Uganda Cancer Institute, in 2016 the number of cancer patients increased by 4,000 and 1, 500 of them succumbed to the disease.

Experts have predicted an increase in cancer in the developing countries due to several factors including improved standard of living and change in life style.
