Suspected Sudan rebel leader to be charged with terrorism

The Police in Koboko have preferred charges of terrorism on the suspected South Sudanese rebel leader who was arrested by the UPDF and handed to the Police.

Koboko Police are holding John Data Taban alias Tom Candiga, 51, from Yei in South Sudan.

Taban who claims to be a colonel in one of South Sudan military groups had been  residing in Koboko municipality before his arrest on October 15.

Josephine Angucia the Police spokesperson for West Nile region said the suspected rebel leader will be charged with terrorism, illegal recruitment and training contrary to section 9(1c) and 2 of Terrorism Act.

She says inquiries continue in to the matter and once investigations are complete, he will be produced before a competent court for trail.

Already two of the Ugandan youth whom Taban and his associates recruited have returned from South Sudan and Police says they are willing to testify before court.

According to information got from some of the witnesses who escaped from South the rebel training ground after being recruited, the recruits were promised jobs and money before they joined.
