Fort Portal councillor arrested for inciting violence during age limit rally

The Police in Fort Portal have arrested the Kabarole district Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) councillor on allegations of inciting violence.

Jorum Bintamanya, the councillor representing South Division, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon at Summit Hotel in Fort Portal town by plain-clothed detectives led by David Tumusiime, the head of electoral and political crimes department at Fort Portal Police Station.

Lydia Tumushabe, the Rwenzori regional Police spokesperson said that last week  while at a consultative meeting on the age limit bill at Buhinga play grounds, Bintamanya uttered abusive words against President Museveni.

Tumushabe also said that at the same rally, Bintamanya incited people of Toro against some leaders in Toro who support removal of the age limit. She adds that before his arrest, Police has been collecting evidence such as recordings.

"We have enough evidence which includes records that he incited violence while at a rally in Buhinga play ground and we are going to charge him in courts of law," Tumushabe said.

Tumushabe did not reveal the specific statements that were uttered by Bintamanya she, however, said Bintamanya used offensive statements at the rally.

However, a source at Fort Portal Police Station told New Vision that Police received complaints from Adolf Mwesige, the defence  minister and Peace Mutuuzo, the state minister for culture.

The source said that the two ministers accused Bintamanya of insulting them and inciting people to attack them and their relatives.

The source futher said that the arrest of Bintamanya follows a security meeting held on Tuesday morning chaired by Stephen Asiimwe, the resident district commissioner Kabarole.

"It is true that he attacked the two ministers during the rally and Police received the complaints, but we are yet conclude our investigations before arraigning him in court," the source said.
