Lira district has started the construction of roads in the district using new road works equipment given by the government.

The programme was launched at the district headquarters by the district chairperson, Alex Oremo Alot, and MPs Jonathan Odur, joy Atim and Charles Angiro.

The road construction programme starts at Boroboro in Erute South with over 12km road to be worked on, before the equipment will be shifted to other constituencies in rotation.

Following heavy rain, many roads in the district have been damaged and need urgent maintenance.

President Museveni in June commissioned 1,151 pieces of road construction equipment newly imported from Japan for distribution to all the 118 districts. The road equipment are procured with a loan from the Japanese Bank for International Co-operation.

Each district is supposed to receive a road unit comprising one motor grader, one vibro roller, one wheel loader, one water bowser and two dump trucks.

While meeting residents of Boroboro, where the road works started on Friday, the RDC Robert Abak requested them to surrender their land, where the roads will pass. He warned road workers against seducing young girls and married women.

Abak also warned the residents against taking the law in their hands and killing each other as is happening in the neighbouring sub county of Bar. Eight people including a UPDF sergeant on pass leave have been killed in the last two weeks in separate incidents.

Alot warned the equipment operators against stealing fuel.
