VIPPU Commandant arrested

Awita was arrested alongside 5 other senior police officers by a team from the Police Flying Squad.

The Commandant of the elite Very Important Persons Protection Unit (VIPPU) Lodovic Awita who was the former head of the narcotics department in the Uganda Police Force has been arrested. Awita was arrested alongside 5 other senior police officers by a team from the Police Flying Squad.

Police spokesperson Asan Kasingye confirmed the arrest but refused to divulge where the suspects were being held. However Flying Squad source confirmed that Awita and the other officers had been taken to the dreaded Nalufenya.

The source further told Saturday Vision that Awita and the other officers were prime suspects in the theft of over sh13b seized cocaine stolen in 2015.  Security sources told Saturday Vision the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) was also investigating the same matter.
