Voters to NRM MP: Oppose age limit Bill

Nov 01, 2017

“I was surprised that many of my voters are against the Bill. I therefore, have no option, but to take their stand,” Kajara County MP Michael Timuzigu

The Kajara County MP Michael Timuzigu, who is an NRM MP, has resolved to oppose the constitutional amendment Bill which seeks to remove the presidential age limit.

Timuzigu told journalists at Parliament today that his decision follows the consultations he has carried out in his constituency.

"I thought since my constituency is predominantly NRM, majority would support the Bill. However, I was surprised that many are against the Bill. I therefore, have no option but to take the stand of my constituency," Timuzigu said.

The young legislator reported that the elders in his constituency told him someone who is 75 years and above cannot lead the country well because his body becomes weaker and experiences mental retardation.

He urged his fellow NRM MPs to be honest and follow the voices within their constituencies.

"Generally speaking, majority Ugandans are against that Bill. Even those reports you see of some NRM MPs who select some few people, give them money and declare support for the Bill are not representative of the thinking of most voters in those areas," Timuzigu argued.
