I will not withdraw age limit removal Bill - Magyezi

He implored Ugandans who are against the Bill to come up with convincing reasons on why they think it should not be passed by Parliament

Despite criticism and calls to withdraw the Constitution Amendment Bill 2017, which seeks to lift the presidential age limit, currently capped at 75 years, Igara West MP Raphael Magyezi the architect of the Bill, has vowed not to withdraw it.

According to Magyezi, he is facing pressure from Ugandans to withdraw the Bill which he says he is not ready to do so.

"I can allow it to be amended but not to withdraw it. Even if it is rejected, I should have done my part as a legislator. As for now the Bill is there and I'm not going to withdraw it" Magyezi told journalists at Parliament on Wednesday.

He defended the Bill as a good piece of legislation which will favour all Ugandans to take up leadership positions irrespective of their age differences.

He implored Ugandans who are against the Bill to come up with convincing reasons on why they think it should not be passed by Parliament adding that the current provision, Article 102 (b) of the Constitution on age limit, is discriminatory in nature especially to senior citizens of Uganda.

Magyezi also denied allegations that he had received a hefty bribe to take on the age limit removal project, saying he is doing it for elderly Ugandans.
