The newly built Uganda Martyrs' Catholic Chapel, Kyambogo University, has been officially opened and blessed. The function on Sunday was presided over by the Vicar General of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kampala, the Rt Rev Msgr Charles Kasibante.
The 600-seater octagonal Church was built with financial and technical assistance from Emmaus Foundation, a charity/development organisation of the late Fr John Scalabrin.
Some money was also generated locally by the Catholic Community of the University and friends of the chaplaincy. The function was also graced by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Eli Katunguka among other dignitaries.
According to Fr Dr John Bosco Ssettuuma, the new chapel was constructed at a cost of about sh1.2bn.
The opening of the chapel also marked the beginning of weeklong activities to mark the 1st anniversary of Fr John Scalabrin, an Italian Catholic priest and philanthropist, who made an immense contribution to the development of Uganda through his educational, health and infrastructure development projects.
