Uganda enjoyed a perfect start to the 2017 FIBA Africa Zone V Club Championships as the regional basketball tournament got underway with no surprises on day one, Sunday at Lugogo.
Only the KCCA Leopards encountered anything resembling competition before putting away Rwanda's ARP 57-45 in the opening game of the tournament. The UCU Lady Canons expectedly coasted against Somalia's Horseed, running out 108-42 winners, while their male compatriots Betway Power and City Oilers also similarly strolled to victories against Tanzania's ABC and Savio respectively.
The schedule was clearly made with the idea of a climax in mind as the big teams were kept apart on the opening day in both draws. As a result, contenders KPA were matched up against Ethiopia's Gondar in men's Group B and the Kenyans made light work of their opponents with a 108-46 blowout.
Rwanda's Patriots were the biggest winners of the day, thrashing Ethiopia's Hawasa 110-43. Defending women's champions KPA had a bye in the seven-team women's round robin.
In so for as the aforementioned outcomes on the first day were expected, there were really no special discoveries.
It's later today, that a clearer picture of the women's title race will emerge, with KCCA and UCU meeting Kenyan rivals Equity and UCU in what are expected to be very close affairs.
The Oilers and Power should both make it 2-0 when they face Ethiopian opponents Hawasa and Gondar in the evening games.
