The new building structures at Kyambogo University will play key role in increasing the enrolment of students pursuing science and technology courses.

According to the commissioner of education in the education ministry, Jolly Uzamukunda Karabaaya, the enrolment of students studying science and technology in high institutions of learning stands at 25% which is below the 40% target.

Uzamukunda explained that with more space created and high-tech facilities in place, the enrolment in science and technology is bound to increase.

"Improvement in space, quality of teaching and quality of service delivery increases the enrolment of students pursuing science and technology courses," Uzamukunda said.

The four new structures were constructed by Ambitious Construction Company with funding from African Development Bank (AfDB) to a tune of $25m (about sh87b).

They include central virtual library, technical teacher education complex, multi-purpose science complex and central teaching facility.

The commissioner who was speaking at the official handover of four new structures to Kyambogo University council noted that it is also going to accelerate the attainment of middle income status as more science and technology graduates enter into the job market.

She explained that for society to move from low-income status to middle-income 45% of its population should be graduates of science and technology.

"This will happen when we provide quality education, skill the youth who are able to create jobs and wealth to chase poverty," she said.

Speaking at the same function, the vice-chancellor of Kyambogo University, Prof. Elly Katunguka, observed that the new modern facilities will improve sanitation.

"This is a milestone for Kyambogo University. The university has been operating in dilapidated structures" Prof. Katunguka stated.

The new structures are to be officially commissioned next year by President Yoweri Museveni.

The vice-chancellor urged the heads of departments to provide relevant skills as they now have modern facilities fully equipped with Internet.
