Floodlit basketball for universities launched

Teams have been pitted into two groups where the top two in each pool will qualify for the semi-finals

Local university sports governing body AUUS has launched the inaugural University Floodlit Basketball that will get underway on Friday.

In the opening fixture, Makerere University will be up against Ndejje University in Wandegeya.

The event that has attracted 10 ladies and men's clubs is however likely to come at a cost not only to the players but to the universities as well in the long run.

Among these, six universities of Makerere, Ndejje, Nkumba, UCU, KIU and Kampala University are also taking part in the FUBA National Basketball League and this means the players are to face the consequences of playing in two different competitions with little rest.

"We have selected dates that don't coincide with the national league fixtures and it's only those students below 25 years who will be allowed to play so the clubs will not be affected so much," said AUUS president Peninah Kabenge.

Besides the league that is played every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, the floodlit basketball will be played on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Kabenge also promised the players security adding that; "Basketball fans are not like soccer fans, they are calm so we don't expect any chaos. But if any we are also assured of security from the host teams."

Teams have been pitted into two groups where the top two in each pool will qualify for the semi-finals while the bottom teams will head into classification games.

In Pool A for both men and women has Ndejje, Makerere, Nkumba, KU and International University of East Africa while Pool B has UCU, KIU, UMU, Kyambogo and Cavendish University.

The tourney that ends on November 11 is sponsored by Rwenzori and Roke Telecom.
