"Transport for London has concluded that Uber London Limited is not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence," it said in a statement.

London transport authorities announced Friday they would not renew Uber's licence to operate in the city when it expires on September 30 for safety reasons, although it has three weeks to appeal.

"Transport for London has concluded that Uber London Limited is not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence," it said in a statement.

RESPONSE FROM UBER

US ride-sharing app Uber on Friday said it would appeal a decision by London authorities not to renew its licence, warning it would impact over 3.5 million Londoners who use the service.

"By wanting to ban our app from the capital, Transport for London and the mayor have caved in to a small number of people who want to restrict consumer choice," the company said in a statement.
