The mob alleged that Ssebuuma had stolen coffee from Lusisira’s home. They reportedly tied him up and threatened to burn him.

The Police in Lyantonde district are holding Dr. Joseph Lusisira, the in-charge of Kabayanda Health Centre II, over allegations of attempted murder.

Lusisira, 45, was arrested on Tuesday after spending over a month in hiding following an incident in which he allegedly led a mob that attacked Lawrence Ssebuuma, whom they accused of theft.

The mob alleged that Ssebuuma had stolen coffee from Lusisira's home. They reportedly tied him up and threatened to burn him.

He was rescued by good Samaritans who rushed him to Lyantonde Hospital after sustaining burns on body.

Following the incident, the Police arrested Tanansi Ssemiro, the Kabayanda Local Council 1 chairman and John Mayanja for concealing the crime.

According to Eudes Kayanja, the Lyantonde Crime Investigations officer, some district officials witnessed the incident, but did not report it.

Kayanja says Lusisira sought for immediate leave, but Police started looking for him.

However, Tomas Oyo, Lyantonde District Police Commander, confirmed Lusisira's arrest, saying he will be produced in court any time after conclusive investigations.

Health workers say they have done all it takes to save Ssebuuma's life but his mother Leokadia Nakate says it may take some time for him to recover from the burns.

Ssebuuma narrates ordeal

Ssebuuma explained that a group of people dragged him out of one of the local bars, accusing him of stealing from Lusisira. "I am a responsible citizen with a clean record. But I pleaded with them in vain. They just beat me up," he recounted.

He said he sought justice, but failed in the first place after some leaders ignored him until Lyantonde Resident District Commissioner Suleiman Tiguragara Matojo intervened in the matter.

Matojo said he ordered the Police to look for Lusisira.
