The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has asked the State to stop discrimination in the manner they handle people opposed to the amendment of Article 102 (b) on presidential age limit.

The chairperson of the commission, Medi Kaggwa, said the State has exhibted double standards on how they are handling the matter.

"I have watched televisions and the manner in which the groups opposed to the amendment are handled, arrested is bad, compared to the supporters of the Bill who are given Police protection," he noted.

He asked Police to desist from discrimination while executing their duties to avoid raising suspicion among the public.

Kaggwa said this while addressing the media at the UHRC offices in Kampala on Tuesday.

"I believe  the groups are exercising their right to assembly and freedom of speech, but  one group is being mistreated," he added.

At the same briefing, Kaggwa also revealed that a human rights consortium and csos are going to hold a national conference on economic, social and cultural rights to check on Government's compliance with international treaties.

The conference is to discuss and review the quality of service delivery at the local government level. The event will run from September 20, at Makerere University.
