MPs approve Owiny-Dollo for deputy Chief Justice

JUDICIARY APPOINTMENT | OWINY-DOLLO

The Appointments Committee of Parliament has approved Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo as the new Deputy Chief Justice.

Owiny-Dollo will replace retiring Justice Stephen Kavuma, who is set to retire before the end of this month, after clocking the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.

Justice Richard Buteera and Paul Mugamba have also been approved to serve on the Supreme Court.

After more than two decades of private legal practice, Owiny-Dollo, 61, joined the bench in 2008 as a High Court judge, after quitting elective politics following his loss to Prof. Morris Ogenga Latigo in a parliamentary race for Agago County.

He has served as resident judge in Fort Portal, the International Crimes Division of the High Court and the High Court Execution and Bailiffs Division.

Owiny-Dollo famously handled the case against the masterminds of the 2010 terrorist bombings that targeted revelers watching the World Cup final at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds and Kabalagala, a city suburb.
