A team of staff from GEMS Cambridge International Schools have petitioned ministry of East African Community Labour and Social Protection and the Institute of Human Resource Management over what they term as violation of their rights.
They claim that GEMS Cambridge International Schools in Nairobi, Kenya and Kampala, Uganda are in a major push to declare many workers redundant in order to reduce expenses due to great financial losses caused by lack of students and mounting debts.
They want the Labour Office to get involved.
They claim that many Kenyan and Uganda staff have been so unfairly treated by the false "Regional HR Manager”.
They also say that there should be locally hired HR Officers, with authentic and legal qualifications, authentic degrees managing our programs.
“If you look at the employment salaries records for GEMS, you will see that of all the employees of GEMS schools in Nairobi and Kampala, one of the officials here, was financially rewarded by leadership for her doing their bidding,” reads part of the letter.
“Of all the hundreds of staff, she received a 65% pay raise last year from leadership last year in 2016. No one has received such a pay raise except for her, approved by leadership,” add the claimants.
“We hope you will truly investigate this matter and take quick action before many more illegal terminations are carried out by leadership using their false HR officer,” they note.
“We hope for integrity, honesty, committed investigation of the facts and documents, and a direct, rapid, and clear judgement based on the facts of the case,” adds their plea.
Attempts to reach the management of GEMS were still futile over the matter.
