An impressive effort to promote Kampala as a tourist destination has been launched.

In partnership with the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Sky Code, a local software developer has developed an online portal and a mobile application that will help guide people around the interesting and historical spots around the city.

"The portal has a lot of information about tourism sites and related events in the city. From places with food, to religious establishments, the portal has everything," Frank Luyinda Otto, the CEO of Sky Code told the New Vision after the Wednesday launch in Kampala.

Besides information on tourism sites around the city, the mobile application has additional features like navigation, notifications on events happening around the city.

Martin Ssekagya, the deputy director for Information Communication Technology (ICT) at KCCA says the authority entered a partnership with the private firm to enable Kampalans and visitors to the city have a one stop centre for information.

"We want to have a society with valuable information that will help promote tourism."

Also launched, was a loyalty card off which tourists will get discounts for several services consumed like transport, internet services and accommodation consumed in the city.

Stephen Asiimwe, CEO Uganda Tourism Board endorsed the initiative.

"This is a fantastic initiative that is going to improve the visibility of Kampala and Uganda. Kampala is still the most visited part of the country, both by locals and foreigners," he said.

"These applications will help people navigate themselves around the city. Even Ugandans do not know where to eat. Where do you go if you want to eat Indian food? What about Turkish food? What about the best local dishes? So this initiative will help on this front."

The "Visit Kampala" mobile application is available to those with phones powered by Android operation system. Developers say the app will be available to Apple users soon. The portal can be accessed on www.visitkampala.net
