Parliament to honour Rurangaranga today

The fallen UPC stalwart's body will lie in state in parliament. He will be buried on Saturday.

KAMPALA - Parliament will have a special sitting Thursday to honour fallen former UPC chairman Rtd. Maj. Edward Rurangaranga.

His body will be brought to parliament at 10am local time and lie in state there for MPs to pay their tributes to the former politician.

Rurangaranga died aged 87 at his home in Sheema district Monday night.

He will be laid to rest on Saturday.

Meanwhile, President Yoweri Museveni directed that the former UPC national chairman be accorded an official burial for the contribution he made to the country.

This was revealed by Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda at a meeting he convened at the Office of the Prime Minister on Wednesday to plan for the burial of the former llegislator and local leader.

This detail was contained in a statement issued by Julius Mucunguzi, the communications advisor to the prime minister.

The meeting was attended by members of Rurangaranga's family led by the widow, Winifred Rurangaranga and children, the leadership of UPC led by party president Jimmy Akena, and government representatives.

Government officials included tourism minister Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, Government Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa, public service minister Muruli Mukasa and finance minister Matia Kasaija.

UPC stalwart and economist Yona Kanyomozi also attended the meeting as well as parliamentary commissioner and MP Cecilia Ogwal.

During the meeting, Rugunda described Rurangaranga as "principled man" who was a mentor to many people.

"Our elder Edward Rurangaranga played a significant role in Uganda's pre- and post-independence history, both at local and national levels. He mentored many and was a principled man. May the Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace."

The meeting released the progamme for sending off Rurangaranga as follows:

Wednesday 2: Body at Uganda House (2pm)

Thursday 3: Body lies in State in Parliament for Parliament to pay tribute (10am to 5pm)

Friday 4: Funeral Service at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero (9am to 12 noon)

Friday 4: Body taken to Kitagata, Sheema (afternoon)

Saturday 5: Burial at his home in Kitagata, Sheema (12 noon)
