Busia district health department has issued a public cholera alert following the outbreak of the diseases in the neighbouring Kenya.

According to Bena Nanyama, the deputy district health officer in charge of maternal health, six people have been confirmed dead in Kenya.

“There is a threat in the neighbourhood and we don’t have to wait cholera to reach here before we take action,” she said.

She said that given the fact that many people cross the border on daily basis to trade, sooner than later cholera will be in Busia district.

Cholera broke out in Busia district twice last year and claimed several lives.

Nanyama asked people to observe high hygiene standards by avoiding shaking hands, eating food sold on the streets and drinking un-boiled water.

She said other preventative measures put in place include giving out water guard tablets to the residents, asking them to report all suspect cholera cases, avoid treating suspect cases at home and putting the disaster preparedness committee which includes medics, chiefs and local leaders on standby.
