19-year-old Serere woman held over stealing child

Police in Serere district is investigating a case of child theft.

The suspect, Caroline Judith Adongo,19, is a resident of Opure village Atirra sub-county in Serere.

She is alleged to have stolen a child belonging to Phiona Adongo, one of her friends.

Michael Odongo, the police spokesperson East Kyoga, says the incident happened on June 23.

He explained that Adongo disappeared with a child at Soroti Taxi Park after she requested to help the mother out, before disappearing into hiding with the child. She is alleged to have breastfed it.

Odongo adds that police subjected the suspect and the child to a medical checkup and found the suspect to be HIV positive while the child was found negative.

"The child has been handed over to Amecet children's home in Soroti municipality as investigations into the matter proceeds," Odongo said

He said it took police one month to establish where Adongo was hiding.
