Buganda kingdom has kicked off preparations for the reigning king's coronation anniversary, with a boost of sh100m from various sponsors.

Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi will be marking 24 years since he was enthroned as the King of Buganda on July 31 in 1993. The installation ceremony took place at the kingdom's coronation site in Nagalabi, Budo, making Mutebi the 36th Kabaka of Buganda.

Mutebi is the son of the late king Sir Edward Mutesa II.

While addressing journalists on the preparations of the event, the chairman of the organizing committee, Ahmad Lwasa said all activities are underway and in high gear.

This year's event will be held at Buwekula County headquarters in Mubende district.

Lwasa, also the deputy speaker of the Buganda Assembly (Lukiiko), noted that they already have sponsors who are giving support towards the preparations.

Ahead of the event, several activities including sports, health and legal aid camps will be held.

Lwasa said they are going to have rugby competitions at Namilyango College on July 23, prayers at Kibuli and Old Kampala and other mosques (July 28), prayers at Kireka and Najjanannkumbi Seventh Day Adventist Churches (July 29) and prayers at Rubaga Cathedral for Catholics, Namirembe for Anglicans and Namungoona for Orthodox.

They have also organized bicycle racing on July 29 and a football match between Buwekula and Singo Counties on 30.

Minister for the Kabaka and bulungi bwansi, Mayanja Nkalubo cautioned Kabaka's loyalists against blocking roads.

"We know you love the Kabaka but stop prostrating in the middle of the roads and blocking them. It disrupts traffic thus inconveniencing other travellers. We should stay disciplined to portray a good image," she said.

She asked people to welcome the Kabaka in big numbers along the roads and at the venue in an organized way.

The event is to kick off at 9am local time with various rituals as per tradition. The Kabaka is expected to arrive at the main venue at about 10.30am local time.
