Most often the perpetrators of these crimes are people who have responsibility over children

Child activists in Katakwi district have called on Members of Parliament to pass strong measures protecting children against sexual abuse.

The call comes amidst escalating cases of defilement and rape nationwide which current stands at 17,567 and 5,692 respectively.

Fredrick Otim Adulai, the executive director foundation for development of children at risk noted that most often the perpetrators of these crimes are people who have responsibility over children like parents, teachers and guardians.

He explained that the increasing cases of sexual abuse of minors have led to more children contracting HIV/AIDS, and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Otim said having punitive actions against defilers and rapists of children would curb the vice which has become rampant in the country.
